Circus

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus (trading name) is incorporated as the Flying Fruit Fly Foundation Limited and governed by a Board of Directors. It is a not-for-profit charitable institution established in 1989 as an incorporated public company.

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus has been registered as an income exempt charitable entity since July 2000 under sub-division 50B.

From 2000 it also has enjoyed endorsement as a deductible gift recipient under section 30-BA of the income assessment act, (12.1.1 on the register of cultural organisations).

It is subject to the regulations of the Australian Securities & Investments Commission and an independent audit is conducted annually, administrators, artistic, training and technical staff are employed to manage the foundation.

The circus is also recognised federally by the Australia Council for the as one of Australia’s outstanding arts organisations.  It is recognised as a national centre of excellence in circus training, and is funded by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA).

In 2009 the Hon. Peter Garrett, Federal Minister for DEWHA stated: “I have always very much appreciated the work done at this circus school and the work the Fruit Flies do generally.  They are a national and internationally renowned performance outfit in circus arts.”

The circus receives substantial financial support on a triennial basis from the governments of New South Wales and Victoria, through Arts NSW, the NSW Department of Education & Training, the NSW Department of Sport & Recreation and Arts Victoria. The City of Wodonga and AlburyCity both recognise the value and importance of the FFFC and fund the company through their cultural grants programs.  In addition the company receives project grants from various funding sources. Government support obliges FFFC to meet certain performance measures.

The circus operates on an annual budget of approximately $1.4 million, roughly half of which is self-generated, through training fees, performance fees and corporate and philanthropic sponsorship.
